Rwanda has made remarkable progress in rebuilding its social and economic
infrastructure since the end of the war in 1994. A large number of internally
displaced people and returning refugees have been resettled, and progress has
been made in rebuilding capacity for economic management, restoring
macroeconomic stability, and initiating key structural reforms.
This sets the stage for the Government’s policy to shift from
emergency and humanitarian assistance to rehabilitation and development.
The following pages are based upon the
Government publication Rwanda Development Indicators 1999 (July 1999), with
sectoral studies added where they are available. The statistical tables for
each section can be downloaded in Excel workbooks. For more information about
definitions and data sources used, see the Technical
Notes. For more information about the Government's policy on improving its
statistics, see Statistical Issues in the
Policy Framework Paper.
A more recent but less detailed picture of the Rwandan economy can be obtained from the
Background to the 2000 Budget (October 1999).
This section will be updated with Rwanda Development Indicators 2000 in
July 2000.
